What to Consider Before Designing Your Kitchen Cabinets
Workflow, storage, materials and lighting: the decisions that make the difference between a kitchen that looks good and one that works well for years.

Kitchen cabinets are one of the largest investments in a home interior, and one of the hardest to change later. Thinking through a few key questions before design begins will help you get a kitchen that is beautiful and genuinely practical.
How do you cook?
A household that cooks large meals daily needs more worktop, larger pots and pans storage and stronger extraction than one that cooks lightly. Think about who cooks, how often and whether there are times when several people use the kitchen at once.
Plan the workflow
Arrange the main zones in the order you use them: storage, preparation, cooking, serving and cleaning. Keep the fridge, sink and hob within easy reach of each other without placing them so close that you have no room to work.
Storage that fits what you own
- Deep drawers for pots and pans are easier to use than low cupboards.
- Tall larder units hold dry goods and small appliances.
- Plan a place for bins, recycling and cleaning products.
- Corner units benefit from pull-out or carousel fittings.
Choose materials for real life
Kitchens face heat, steam, spills and constant handling. Ask how each cabinet finish and worktop surface responds to moisture, scratches and cleaning products, and how edges are sealed. In humid climates, moisture resistance is especially important.
Appliances and services
Decide on appliances early, because cabinet sizes depend on them. Confirm positions for gas, water, drainage and electrical points, and whether a washing machine or dishwasher needs to be integrated.
Lighting and finishing details
Under-cabinet lighting makes preparation safer and gives the kitchen a warm glow in the evening. Handles, hinges and drawer runners are used thousands of times, so choose good-quality hardware.
